Summer Tutoring For High School Students

The summer is the perfect time for your high school student to prepare for a successful school year come fall.  It is a great time to work on study skills, writing, or math.  For success in fall, I recommend finding out the text books that your student will be working with especially for math and science courses and any advanced placement or honors courses.  The student can preview the material over the summer.  In the fall, your high school student will feel confident in the classroom as they have already seen some of the material that they will be working with.  Our tutors can help your student to set up a study schedule for the summer as they preview the material.  At the regular meetings with their tutor, your student can ask questions about the different concepts they have been previewing and learn a few things before they enter the classroom in the fall.  For mathematics courses, the tutor will be able to fill in any holes in the students basic math skills and teach some of the concepts for the following semester to ensure success in the fall.  If your student struggles with writing or just wants to become a better writer, one of our tutors can meet with him or her throughout the summer to work on writing papers and essays.  For more information, please call me at 310-720-1883 or email me at melissa@expandingabilities.com.

Summer Tutoring for Elementary School Students

Many elementary school students can benefit from a few tutoring sessions during the summer.  One of our tutors can meet with your son or daughter anywhere from 2 times per week to once every other week and provide a summer program to keep your student on top of things.  This will prevent your child from starting school in the fall and feeling overwhelmed as they are not used to working due to the long summer break.  I recommend that students do a minimum of thirty minutes per day four days a week working on their math skills and an additional thirty minutes per day reading and/or writing.  Our tutors can provide guidelines for the assignments your student completes daily as well as correct their work and teach any concepts that the student struggles with.  Mathematics workbooks and grade level bridge books can be purchased at the teacher’s supply store on Crenshaw and PCH in Torrance.  For further information regarding our summer programs, please contact me at 310-720-1883 or email me at Melissa@expandingabilities.com.

Of course!  All of our tutors are college graduates with extensive experience teaching and tutoring.  Many of our tutors have a master’s degree or are currently working to obtain their M.S. or M.A. degree.  Our tutors can help you with a college course and offer their experience in obtaining their degrees.  We have worked with many students from El Camino College, Harbor College, Cal State Long Beach, and Cal State Dominguez.

Is there some type of assessment test?

Typically, we do not administer an assessment test.  We can do this if you wish.  During the initial tutoring session, we do a general assessment of skills based on previous assignments and tests.  We continue to assess the student during tutoring sessions in order to make the best approach during tutoring and help the student to reach his or her goals.

What is the first step in the process?

The first step is to schedule an appointment directly with your tutor.  During the first session, the tutor will evaluate your situation.  The tutor will want to see past work, tests, notes, and text books.  With your personal goals in mind, the tutor will come up with a strategy as to how you can meet those goals in the amount of time allotted.  The tutor will suggest frequency of tutoring and any additional work that must be done outside of tutoring sessions.  The tutor will adjust the program as needed.

Tutoring Goals

Your tutor will help you become comfortable and confident as a self-directed learner, specifically through problem solving.  Ultimately, you should have a feeling of mastery of material.  If you don’t surpass your own preconceived limitations and feel good about yourself, we have not done our job.  Over time your interest and enthusiasm for learning should increase, which leads to improved academic performance.  We’d love to see your abilities expand to the extent that you no longer need a tutor.

How to get the most out of tutoring

Be physically and mentally prepared for your tutoring session.  Make mistakes so we can learn from them!  It is through trial and error that we make progress.  Tell your tutor when you don’t understand something and ask questions regularly.  We ask you to be patient with us as we try different methods and discover what works best for you.  We expect you to put in as much time and effort outside of tutoring as is required to meet your goals.  Practice what we recommend.
