Congratulations to the Graduates!!

Last Saturday, May 23rd, Marymount College in Rancho Palos Verdes held the commencement ceremony for 2009.  I was very happy to be in attendance and to see so many students that I have worked with walk across the stage and receive their diplomas.  Math can be a major hurdle for many students to jump as they are going through school.  Some students spend 4 years at a junior college because they cannot pass their math courses while others give up on college completely.  At Marymount College, students have the opportunity to fulfill their mathematics requirements for their bachelor’s degrees and transfer to a four year college.  Given the small class sizes and the tutoring services that are offered, students have a chance to do very well in math and reach their goals!!

Get A Head Start With Tutoring

Now that we are a few weeks into the school year, many students will have their first test or quiz.  If you notice your student is struggling, please call us and schedule a tutoring appointment.  We can schedule every other week to start.  It is always easier on the students and their tutor if we do preventative tutoring as opposed to trying to get a students grade up from a D or an F.  We currently have tutors available to help students in the following cities:  El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance, San Pedro, Rancho Palos Verdes, and Rolling Hills Estates.  Melissa Haueter 310-720-1883

What are the Math Olympiads?

The Math Olympiads were created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, well-known math educator.  Students all over the world participate in the Olympiads.  Teams are set up with 35 students or less at your elementary or middle school.  From November to March of each year, there are 5 contests per month.  Contests are set up for students in grade 4 through 6 and 7 through 8.  These contests provide students with an incentive to study math.  The challenging practice and contest problems require critical thinking and analysis.  Students apply skills they learn in the classroom and solve problems they have never seen before.

For more information on the Math Olympiads, please visit http://www.moems.org/.

Summer Tutoring For High School Students

The summer is the perfect time for your high school student to prepare for a successful school year come fall.  It is a great time to work on study skills, writing, or math.  For success in fall, I recommend finding out the text books that your student will be working with especially for math and science courses and any advanced placement or honors courses.  The student can preview the material over the summer.  In the fall, your high school student will feel confident in the classroom as they have already seen some of the material that they will be working with.  Our tutors can help your student to set up a study schedule for the summer as they preview the material.  At the regular meetings with their tutor, your student can ask questions about the different concepts they have been previewing and learn a few things before they enter the classroom in the fall.  For mathematics courses, the tutor will be able to fill in any holes in the students basic math skills and teach some of the concepts for the following semester to ensure success in the fall.  If your student struggles with writing or just wants to become a better writer, one of our tutors can meet with him or her throughout the summer to work on writing papers and essays.  For more information, please call me at 310-720-1883 or email me at melissa@expandingabilities.com.

Summer Tutoring for Elementary School Students

Many elementary school students can benefit from a few tutoring sessions during the summer.  One of our tutors can meet with your son or daughter anywhere from 2 times per week to once every other week and provide a summer program to keep your student on top of things.  This will prevent your child from starting school in the fall and feeling overwhelmed as they are not used to working due to the long summer break.  I recommend that students do a minimum of thirty minutes per day four days a week working on their math skills and an additional thirty minutes per day reading and/or writing.  Our tutors can provide guidelines for the assignments your student completes daily as well as correct their work and teach any concepts that the student struggles with.  Mathematics workbooks and grade level bridge books can be purchased at the teacher’s supply store on Crenshaw and PCH in Torrance.  For further information regarding our summer programs, please contact me at 310-720-1883 or email me at Melissa@expandingabilities.com.
