The City of Torrance
Torrance is centrally located in the southwest corner of Los
Angeles County in an area known as the South Bay. Local attractions
include beautiful Torrance Beach, Madrona Marsh--a freshwater nature
preserve--the Torrance Cultural Arts Center, the Joslyn Fine Arts
Gallery, the Torrance Historical Society Museum in old Downtown
Torrance, the South Bay Center of the Arts at El Camino College and Del
Amo Fashion Center, the largest enclosed shopping mall in the west.
The present population of Torrance is 133,000, making Torrance the
fourth largest city in Los Angeles County and the 12th largest city in
California.
Torrance boasts a high level of entertainment with 24 parks, a golf
course, swimming pool, and numerous public tennis courts. Wilson Park,
located on Crenshaw Boulevard at Sepulveda, hosts the Cerified Farmers
Market on Tuesday from 8-1 and Saturday from 8-12, a train ride on the
first Sunday of every month, roller hockey, craft shows, free Torrance
Symphony concerts during the year, and the Festival of Trees at
Christmas.
Many people think of the Redondo, Hermosa, and Manhattan beaches when
they think of South Bay beaches. Torrance has an outstanding beach as
well. Torrance Beach features lifeguards, bath houses, a children's
playground, and excellent facilities for swimming, surfing and
volleyball. Each summer, the Daily Breeze International Surf Festival
and the Torrance Beach Cities Triathlon attract thousands of athletes
and spectators. The city is also the site of the Vista's for Blind
Children Mobil/St. Patrick's Day Run, and the Turkey Trot Thanksgiving
Day Fun Run. Other annual events include the Armed Forces Day Parade,
Bunka-Sai Japanese Festival, Gourmet Food and Wine Festival, and the
Torrance shorts Film Festival.
THE SCHOOLS of Torrance
Torrance schools are noted for their academic excellence. Elementary,
middle school and high school students routinely score significantly
above the national median in tests. See below if interested in school
accountability report cards. The Torrance Unified School District has
been recognized for its innovative programs and its schools are
included on the annual list of California Exemplary Schools. Vocational
and technical training for high school students and adults is available
at S.C.R.O.C. and the Torrance Adult Education program offers hundreds
of classes each year. The El Camino Community College campus houses an
art gallery, a planetarium, a theater and the 2,000 seat Marsee
Auditorium.
The mission of the Torrance Unified School District is to ensure that
each and every student is prepared to succeed in life. This is
accomplished in an environment of trust and respect that fosters
positive attitudes toward self, others, work, and responsible
citizenship. We are dedicated to maximizing individual potential and
developing lifelong learners who will be contributing members in a
global society.
Torrance has 17 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 5 high schools,
and 15 adult school locations.
